When it comes to mouth guards for Jiu Jitsu, we personally think that the Venum Challenger Mouth Guard is one of the best options on the market today.

[su_list icon=”icon: check” icon_color=”#20fb48″]

  • Specially Engineered Design
  • High Density Rubber
  • Ne XT fit gel frame for  better adjustment and comfort

[/su_list]

Maybe it is just because of its really cool name, or maybe because it actually works to keep your teeth safe, or maybe for both of those reasons. At any rate, the Venum Challenger Mouth Guard is highly regarded and has been called the best in its class by many athletes.

First of all, it features a specially engineered design to allow you to breathe easily. Some mouth guards make it really hard to breathe, which is of course not ideal. However, this is not a problem this mouth guard suffers from. On a side note, we do like the fact that the Venum Challenger Mouth Guard comes with a protective case, which is convenient for carrying it around and for keeping it clean.

Without a doubt, the best aspect of the Venum Mouth Guard is that it is made with fairly thick high density rubber. It has a lot of shock absorption power to ensure that your teeth stay in one piece even if somebody hits you with that big right hand. If there is one thing that this mouth guard does very well, it is protecting your teeth.

The Venum Challenger is fully adjustable, at least in the beginning. It comes blank, but with some hot water and patience, you can mold it to fit your mouth perfectly. Simply soak it in boiling water, let it cool for a second, shove it in your mouth, and bite down on it. After the mouth guard has cooled down, it will be molded to your mouth and fit your teeth perfectly. If you want optimal oral protection, this is the way to go.

Do keep in mind that this mouth guard is not made to be worn with braces. Also, be sure to let it cool down a little bit before molding because you might bite right through it. Finally, it may start to disintegrate after a couple months of use.

What Makes A Good Mouth Guard?

There are certain aspects of every mouth guard which can make it good or bad. Let’s take a look at the different things which make a good mouth guard. This is important for your safety, so pay attention.

Comfort

Simply put, if the mouth guard you are wearing is not comfortable, you might take it out after a while, which will of course pose a problem. Being comfortable is an important feature for any mouth guard.

The Fit

The Mouth Guard you get needs to fit right. Wearing a mouth guard that is too small will result in it always coming off and being uncomfortable, and the same goes for one that is too big. At any rate, a mouth guard that does not fit right will not offer you with adequate protection. You should look for one that comes blank and can be molded to fit your teeth specifically.

The Outline

The mouth guard should not only protect your front teeth. The mouth guard should go all the way back to your molars and it should also cover most of your gums. Your front teeth are not the only things susceptible to that big right hook.

Thickness

Of course, the whole point of a mouth guard is to provide a layer of padding and shock absorption between your teeth and someone’s fist or foot. When it comes to Jiu Jitsu, a mouth guard that is 1/8 of an inch in thickness is recommended. Wearing one that is too thin will do you no good at all.

Other Options We Also Like

In case you are not a huge fan of the mouth guard for Jiu Jitsu that we picked as the number one choice, here we have some other options that we feel are good options too. So, let’s take a closer look at these as well.

One of the things that really stands out about this particular mouth guard is the fact that it is very thin, yet still very effective. The SISU Mouth Guard is only 1.6 mm thick, which is more than twice as thin as similar options. However, the materials used here are specially made just for this purpose.

[su_list icon=”icon: check” icon_color=”#20fb48″]

  • Extremely thin
  • Rounded edges for custom fit
  • Warrantied dental protection for ages 11 and up

[/su_list]

Just because this thing is thin does not mean that it is not as strong as some of the other options out there. Being so thin is convenient because it makes it much easier, more convenient, and more comfortable to have in your mouth for a prolonged period of time. The technology used here is called Diffusix, and it is specially designed to disperse impact as much as possible, which is exactly what you need for Jiu Jitsu.

The SISU Mouth Guard is quite comfortable thanks to the rounded edges. It has a large profile, so it does cover all of your important teeth and gums, but the rounded edges still ensure that it does not dig into your gums and cause pain. This is a custom fit mouth guard, which means that you have to do the whole boiling water and molding thing, which some find to be a pain in the butt. However, we think this is ideal because there is no better way of creating a perfect fit.

Finally, the SISU Mouth Guard is made with little holes in it in order to ensure that you don’t run out of air. The little holes to affect the integrity and strength of it a little bit, but on the other hand, they allow you to get an adequate amount of oxygen so you can keep training and sparring. All in all, you can even talk and drink with this thing in your mouth, so we do think that it is a really nice option to go with.

[warning] Note: White is not an allowable mouth guard color for some sports – even though you are able to buy it in White! Make sure you choose an allowable color mouth guard for your particular sport[/warning]

While the colors which this mouth guard comes in are truly horrendous, like a neon light show in your mouth, at least it actually works to keep your teeth safe and sound

[su_list icon=”icon: check” icon_color=”#20fb48″]

  • Customizable fit
  • Adult and Youth sizes available
  • Boil and bite design

[/su_list]

As is the case with most modern mouth guards, this one can be molded to perfectly fit your teeth and mouth. Simply boil this thing, let it cool for a minute, and then put it in your mouth, biting down on it quite firmly to mold it to your teeth. It really does not get much easier than that.

This is a single mouth guard for your top teeth, so it does not protect the bottom, but this is no different from the other models we have looked at so far. It is a fairly thick mouth guard, so it will definitely protect your teeth very well.

It has great shock absorption so your teeth should be perfectly safe. That being said, you need to get the right size because this thing is fairly thick, so it might be uncomfortable if you get one that is too big. We do also like how the Sanabul Single Boil Mouth Guard is designed to allow you to breathe, talk, and drink water with ease, things which many mouth guards unfortunately no not account for.

Yet another great option to go with, the Redline Sportswear Custom Fit Mouth Guard will offer you maximum protection for your teeth. This particular mouth guard features a dual layer of protection for a maximum amount of shock absorption and dispersion.

  • 100% FDA approved BPA free
  • ONE SIZE FITS ALL
  • Strategically placed Gel Shock Pads

This thing uses some pretty advanced technology to make sure that your teeth stay in one piece.

Yes, this mouth guard is fairly thick and chunky, so it does take some getting used to, but the level of protection it offers is awesome. What is also pretty cool is that the underside of this mouth guard features some added protection to make sure that your molars and front teeth stay safe and sound even when that big hit connects with your face.

This dual gel layered mouth guard is a custom fit model. This means that the Redline Sportswear Custom Fit Mouth Guard needs to be boiled and molded before wearing. However, as you have probably figured out by now, this is not a hard thing to do. We also like how this thing is FDA approved and free of any harmful chemicals that you don’t want in your body. It even comes with a hygienic carrying case to keep it safe and clean.

If you like mouth guards with cool designs on them, you will definitely like the Oral Mart range of Sports Mouth Guards. Featuring designs such as the US Flag, Vampire Fangs, and 8 other cool colors they might just make your opponent freak out and provide you with an easy win. Ok, so that probably won’t happen, but at least it looks neat, plus of course it protects your teeth too.

  • Dual-layer sports mouth guards
  • BPA Free! Latex Free! Phthalate Free!
  • Super Easy 5 Step molding process

[/su_list]

Like all other mouth guards we have reviewed here, this particular one is also a boil and bite version. It is made with all safe materials (BPA Free! Latex Free! Phthalate Free!), so you don’t need to worry about poisoning yourself.

Simply boil the mouth guard, let it cool, and then bite down onto it to mold it to your teeth. This helps provide you with a perfect fit to protect all of the most vital parts.

This is a fairly thick mouth guard, which does mean that it is good for absorbing those big hits. Just make sure that it fits in your mouth and is comfy, because it is quite chunky. That being said, even if the Oral Mart Mouth Guard is not the most comfortable, at least it does a good job in terms of protection. Also, it comes with its own complimentary carrying case, which is always nice.

Do I Really Need A Mouth Guard?

To be totally honest, yes, you do need a mouth guard for Jiu Jitsu.

This question is kind of annoying because it is like asking DO I REALLY NEED TEETH?

Jiu Jitsu is a pretty dangerous sport and martial art. People who don’t wear mouth guards while practicing it are at a big risk of losing some pearly whites. There is a lot of grappling and striking involved with this martial art, both of which can lead to the loss of teeth.

If you like eating food and talking without a speech impediment, we would definitely recommend wearing a mouth guard when practicing Jiu Jitsu.

Of course, if you are just doing simple training on your own, it is probably not necessary. However, if you are sparring or training intensely with a partner, you definitely want to protect your teeth at all times. Do you like having teeth?

Conclusion

We would of course recommend our own tip pick as the best option for Jiu Jitsu, However, this is somewhat a matter of personal preference and the other 4 options are all fine too. Just keep in mind that teeth are important and they are pricey to replace, so protect them well!
